Judas Companion

Judas Companion’s work revolves around metamorphosis in many senses. I paint, I make masks, I photograph and film myself visualising processes of transformation. I make emotional turmoil visible. Via painting and wearing masks I express my non vocalised feelings and develop works which derive from the subconscious mind. The engagement with my own secrets and vulnerabilities is fascinating and terrifying at the same time. Initially, I invented Judas Companion to protect myself from being vulnerable and getting injured from the outside. Now, Judas has become an opportunity to create work about my inner struggle.

I photograph human bodies, usually cover only their face with a mask: the facial expressions are hidden by grotesque, knitted, woolen, embroidered, furry, masks. Through nudism I am able to address vulnerability, fragility as well as the beauty of the human body. Additionally, nudism in my work provides an aspect of humor which I believe is important to “digest” the rather intense and dark topics I choose. In painting I detach further from the human body. Each painting expresses a feeling that is expressed by a figure, not necessarily a human figure.

My aim is to create works that are both looking at anthropomorphisation and the impossibility of metamorphosis. The absurdity is in the impossibility of becoming somebody else. The very detachment from the natural being is the result of this attempt. It manifests as ‘the inner scream’, which is the context of my work.
