Paul Hartley

Since graduating with an MA in Fine Art in 1998 (Winchester/Barcelona) I have continued to work as a multi media artist. The work has developed from drawing, printmaking and painting which has gradually become more minimal. Initially the mark making was abstract, inspired by artists such as Cy Twombly and Tapies. As I am short sighted and wear glasses I have developed a more autobiographical approach and regularly use the image of ‘spectacles’ or abstract versions of them.

My work often relates to the idea of seeing and of objects going in and out of focus. I have produced various objects, installations and videos that depict the act of seeing and focusing in a fluid way. The 2D mixed media images made with graphite, paint and/or collage, are comprised of apparently confused multi-layered marks that relate to the ‘glasses’ format and which invite the viewer to untangle them.
